Health and wellbeing

Funding level: Up to £1,000

Thixendale Craft and Social Group was set up in 2015 to encourage people of all ages and abilities to participate in creative activities at the village hall with the aim of reducing social isolation and loneliness. Starting with just five or six people the group now welcomes around twenty individuals on a fortnightly basis.; some of whom travel a surprising distance to take part. There is a token charge of £2 per session to cover hire of the premises and cost of materials. Members of the group have voluntarily led art and craft activities and supported each other in developing the skills and confidence to achieve pleasing outcomes. We would now like to introduce a wider range of creative opportunities by buying in some expertise from local artists and experts and to provide the relevant resources to carry out the activities. Funding would enable us to hold a series of workshops which we
could not otherwise afford. Each year the group finds an occasion to showcase our activities and we encourage people to drop in to any sessions to see what is going on. We were delighted to be able to make a significant contribution to the displays at a local art exhibition last year as it was the first time that any of the members had exhibited their work. This gave members a great sense of achievement; a boost to self esteem and a sense of wellbeing.

Moment of Pride

I am particularly proud of the friendly and supportive atmosphere in the sessions. There is a real creative buzz at the same time as relaxing and sociable chatter. It is also pleasing to see that some newly established friendships have led to meeting up to do things together elsewhere.
