Skills for life

Funding level: £5,001 to £10,000

Description

The Scout Association is the UK's largest coeducational youth organisation. It’s leaders and supporters changes lives by offering fun and challenging activities, unique experiences, everyday adventure, developing skills, including teamwork, time management, communication, self-motivation cultural awareness, commitment and the chance to help others so that we make a positive impact in communities.

Set in 34 acres of ancient coppiced woodland with unspoilt beauty, Danemead is the perfect location for any organisation wishing to get back to basics and be one with nature. Ranging from grassed to thick wooded Campsites there’s a spot for everyone. You could even stay in our cabin and have the best of both worlds.

Our project is to carry out a major refurbishment programme by bringing the old bunkhouse cabin up to a more comfortable, safer and energy efficient standard.

We have six bunk rooms that total 28 beds, a small hall, and a well equipped kitchen which was completely refurbished last year funded by the camp site finances. We need to increase the level of insulation by reinsulating the walls and ceilings, remove old electric heaters and replace with modern energy efficient radiators ready for the install of a full central heating system. Replace the single glazed windows with double glazed windows. Replace existing bottled gas supply with a larger gas storage tank. Installation of an indoor toilet room and convert a currently unused room into a separate leader’s room with sleeping accommodation. Replace all the bunk beds. Replace the obsolete gas boiler, new wiring and energy-efficient lighting and install hard wearing carpet. Install IT facilities including Wi-Fi connection and audio visual screen and associated equipment for future training courses and workshops and an increased in use by school parties.
A grant from you will take us closer towards our goal of up to date fit for purpose facilities that will allow more people to benefit from the activities the camp site can offer and to build their personal qualities and abilities. A grant will also encourage the local community who look forward to utilising the facilities when it is completed in 2019.

With increased camping and letting hire income and savings in energy bills we are confident the fully completed refurbished bunk house accommodation and facilities will prove financially sustainable.

The project is being managed by a small team of volunteers drawn from the Danemead Management Committee, camp crew and friends. Together, they have experience in building, project management, project accounting and reporting.

The site is currently used by Scouts and Guides, Army, Sea and Air cadet units, police cadets from Waltham Forest, Enfield and Hertfordshire, several Youth Projects including North Mimms Youth Project and Hackney Youth project and several regular school groups who use the site for both educational needs and as an ideal location for Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award expeditions. This need has been identified by Broxbourne Youth Strategy 2014-2018

The successful completion of this project will encourage the local community to take part in activities and events that will bring people of different ages together in a welcoming and modern environment bunkhouse and provide quality indoor and outdoor opportunities for people of all ages and from all areas of the community for the future.
