Health and wellbeing

Funding level: £10,001 to £25,000

OUR PROJECT – Calum’s Cabin Glasgow Flat No. 2
Calums Cabin has purchased a new Glasgow Flat in Minerva Way, Finnieston to support families who have a child with cancer visiting Glasgow for cancer treatment. The flat is located within a luxury development and it provides on site parking and lift facilities to cater for all. Families using the property will have been referred from their local health boards across the Highlands, Islands, Grampians and Aberdeenshire and relocated to Glasgow for cancer treatment. The flat will be provided for use free of charge to families for weeks or months at a time, providing a real “Home from Home” and to ease the stress, financial burden and displacement of families at an emotional, challenging time when a child is going through grueling cancer treatment.

This is a tried and tested project as Calums Cabin has already purchased and refurbished a similar property to a high, functional standard within the same development in Minerva Way. Our first Calums Cabin Glasgow Flat has been fully occupied since it opened in February 2017 showing the need for families to have their own, private and homely environment and help to increase the psychosocial wellbeing of the child and wider family group. This flat will be able to sleep between 4-6 people at any time. The flat is perfectly located within around 10-20 minutes drive to The Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre and the Royal Hospital for Children, making appointments and treatment schedules easy to navigate and reduce any unnecessary travel costs for families. A cancer diagnosis can have a huge financial impact on families and often one parent will be required to take a break from employment to become a full-time carer for their child. At Calums Cabin, we are dedicated to supporting families in any way we can.

This grant would allow Calums Cabin to refurbish the property, bringing it up to a quality standard. This includes a redesign of the property to maximise available space and functionality. To provide high quality, comfortable furniture, decor and furnishings to create a welcoming space for families and allow them to create a feeling of normality throughout the duration of cancer treatment. Simple things like having a dining table and kitchen to prepare healthy meals, provide family time, allows parents and carers to create a relatable, comfortable and happy home for children to come home to after their treatment. We are supported by John Amabile, Interior Designer who will work with us to create a peaceful, relaxing and luxurious environment.

Moment of Pride

“When your child receives a life threatening diagnosis family becomes even more precious as does time together. If we didn’t have Calums Cabin Glasgow Flat, Kevin and I would have been separated as a couple and also from our younger son for significantly long periods of time”.
