Health and wellbeing

Funding level: £1,001 to £5,000

Description

THE PROJECT - ESSENTIAL CHARACTERISTICS. The activities we intend to provide will engage disabled people mainly with a learning disability under the banner of a multi sports club, and tailored for people with additional support needs. The pattern will follow several paths including:

• A stay and play concept - where there will be opportunity for individual and groups of participants to develop physical fitness, potentially acquire sports skills and techniques within their capacity or to just join the group, and enjoy their own level of participation.
• A share and play concept – where carers join in the activities. While serving the disabled participants, we will also use this concept to prepare the carers for extra curricular activities frequently as family engagement in this area, by providing techniques and models to develop and use between sessions with us and in the longer term.
• A social outing concept – where groups visit or undertake an outing which they will collectively enjoy. This may span a number of different themes involving, for example, a group attending a sports match, or attending a highland games day, or visiting and stretching their experience in a different activity beyond the range available in our immediate locale.

The actual activities provided will be chosen through prior engagement and consultation as appropriate with the carers and cared for. These will enable a fun break in routine for both.

The project will serve special needs young people and adults and their carers providing health and fitness activities generally serving a disabled group that does and will not understand the principles of sport but physically required healthy exercise as much as any person. It will also help carers usually family members parents and siblings who also provide a caring role and have most often exhausted their own efforts to generate fresh and successful challenges for the individuals they care for.

For both the disabled group and the carers the project intends to inspire methods of maintaining their health both with our group activities and in inspiring their own efforts and engagement at family level in between sessions exploring practical and potentially individual activities relevant to individual’s capabilities.

The core fitness activities will take place at our grounds on Duffus Park and surrounding facilities from The SRUC (College) to Cupar sports centre to community space available in Bell Baxter high school (all three adjacent to our grounds and utilising the Councils Dalgairn Day Centre as a base for a number of our planned participants.

We will also create excursions varying as noted above where groups visit or undertake an outing which they will collectively enjoy. This may span a number of different themes involving, for example, a group attending a sports match, or attending a highland games day, or visiting and stretching their experience in a different activity beyond the range available in our immediate locale.

There is no organised provision for this age range nor are there any peer groups who have the skills to coach this group.

Why vote? - Almost everyone has come into contact with a disabled person and can understand how difficult it is to present a challenge, particularly to the learning disabled. We have seen learning disabled children that we have supported within the school education environment become inspired by this type of challenge, however the education system is required to attempt t provide health and fitness activities, beyond school age there is no equivalent official requirement.

We ask that voters support this project to help this group get the health and fitness activity that everyone needs but is a rare achievement for these individuals, hep inspire carers to extend this activity and third to help those organisations who support this group to consider the values and engage in further planning - inspired by this pilot project.
