Skills for life

Funding level: £10,001 to £25,000

Description

Founded in 1931, 3rd Chalkwell Bay operates from our purpose built headquarters in the Old Town of Leigh-on-Sea in Essex, where we run a huge array activities and training for boys and girls ages 6 to 25 and beyond, offering challenge and adventure to over 200 young people in the local area. We are recognised by the Royal Navy as one of the top 100 Sea Scout Groups in the country.

The Group is an accredited Royal Yachting Association Training Centre, with our own in-house volunteer instructors training young people in a variety of nautical disciplines to national governing body standards on most week nights and weekends, using our fleet of sailing, rowing and power boats

We are expanding the training opportunities to get more young people on the water learning new skills, and need make sure we do this safely. We're raising money to purchase & equip a new safety boat, which will allow us to get more young people afloat by supervising more sailing and rowing activities, as well as teaching young people additional skills like how to safely use power boats.

Along with running activities for the young people of 3rd Chalkwell Bay, we regularly host courses and days afloat for other Scouting and youth groups from around the area, as well as providing safety cover to local yacht clubs and groups for youth and charity events such as Essex Cadet Week and Leigh Regatta. A additional safety boat will allow us to support even more activities like this for the local community, extending opportunities for young people to learn teamwork, self-confidence & new skills for life afloat safely.

Moment of Pride

We introduce young people age 6-18 and beyond to the sea, teaching them self-confidence, teamwork, resourcefulness and new skills through activities on the water. Our adult volunteers also learn new skills in coaching, mentoring, communication and working within Scouting and across the community.

Location: Southend-on-Sea
