Skills for life

Funding level: £1,001 to £5,000

Supported by: Gallagher

Tewkesbury Sea Cadets is a registered independent charity, which guides young people with the customs and traditions of the royal navy into responsible adulthood.

It is led by a dedicated team of unpaid volunteers, with 16 uniformed volunteers, led by the Commanding Officer, and a Management Committee of 6 volunteers, led by the chairman.

The unit welcomes cadets from age 10-18, and opens its doors to children from all walks of life, particularly those who are disadvantaged, and are in need of support to gain opportunities to prepare them for adult life.

Tewkesbury Sea Cadets is an ingrained part of the local community, and the unit not only benefits its cadets, but the facilities in the middle of town are used extensively by other organisations.

The unit has this year been recognised by receiving the national award of the Queens Award for Voluntary Service. This is the first time a cadet group in Gloucestershire has ever received this award, and shows just how much the groups volunteers go above and beyond what is expected.

What the unit now needs is support in equipping the new Engineering workshop, as currently it is empty due to funding being desperately needed. The unit cannot currently offer any engineering training due to the lack of a workshop.

The equipping of this workshop will enable the unit to provide its cadets with engineering tuition. This will not only mean they can gain a sea cadet qualification, but they will also be able to gain a BTEC level 2 qualification in Marine Engineering.

This facility will also be used by 6 other units from across Gloucestershire, so will benefit not only the 35 cadets of Tewkesbury, but many other young people in the wider County community.

Moment of Pride

As an independent charity, with no regular funding, and in addition to continuous fundraising to keep the bills paid and building in good repair, its volunteers work tirelessly to provide its cadets with great opportunities.
