Health and wellbeing

Funding level: Up to £1,000

Dementia is a set of symptoms which include memory loss, mood changes and problems with communication and reasoning. Stigma and lack of understanding from others can be a significant obstacle to the well-being and quality of life for those living with dementia and their families.

Wymondham Dementia Support Group are a voluntary organisation that provides a safe, friendly and understanding environment for people living with dementia, their carers and family. WDSG aims to improve the well-being of the people it helps through a variety of activities and caring support.

We are a small local charity responding to local need in Wymondham, its surrounding villages and throughout South Norfolk. Support to our members is provided mainly via twice weekly cafes and meetings. People with dementia and their carers meet for conversation, coffee and support from experienced volunteers. Our volunteers run various activities at these meets throughout each month and include singing, poetry, gardening, table tennis, pool, indoor curling, bar skittles, crafts and reminiscence table.

WDSG wants to continue to expand the range of activities they can offer to stimulate and improve the quality of life of those living with dementia in 2019, and this funding would support this. Key aims are to arrange more local day trips, Christmas parties and also trial dementia friendly exercise classes.

Moment of Pride

From humble beginnings in 2008, WDGS continues to grow its services thanks to it's volunteers and funding from local people and businesses. In 2014, WDSG worked with Age UK Norfolk and the local Town Council to enable Wymondham to become the first ‘Dementia Friendly’ community in Norfolk.
