Health and wellbeing

Funding level: £10,001 to £25,000

Description

The Wave Project provides surf therapy courses to vulnerable young people. Our sessions are proven to improve wellbeing, confidence and reduce anxiety. Here in South Wales we work with over 100 young people every year, providing free, six week surf therapy courses to people aged 8 - 21 who face different challenges during their lives. We run from Aberavon, Port Talbot and Rest Bay, Porthcawl. Young people from across Swansea, Neath Port Talbot, Bridgend, Carmarthenshire, Cardiff, Newport and beyond have accessed our courses. Young people who complete courses with us can then join our Wave Project Surf Club and continue to attend sessions. We rely on amazing local volunteers to help us deliver our work, providing one to one support to young people in the water alongside our two awesome surf schools who provide us with equipment and lifeguards. We tailor all of our sessions to suit our young people, so you'll also find our volunteers helping to create sand castles, build rafts and swimming in the sea on the look out for creatures!

We work with young people who :- are young carers, have physical or learning disabilities, are experiencing mental health issues, are looked after or in foster care, are not in employment, education or training and lots of other circumstances. We have adapted equipment including a beach wheelchair and seated surfboard meaning everyone can take part. Young people are put forward for a course by a professional working with them such as a teacher, social worker, youth worker, nurse - it doesn't matter what other services they work with, they can still surf with us! We can even help with transport. Funding from the Big Lottery Fund allows us to deliver our six week courses - which is why we're asking for the help of the Aviva Community Fund..

Our sessions really help make a difference and create a fun, completely pressure-free environment for young people to feel calm and more positive. We are hoping to secure funding from Aviva for our Wave Project Surf Club - following our six week programmes young people have the option to join our club and carry on surfing weekly, allowing them to keep enjoying a sport, maintain friendships and keep up the good vibes. This money will allow our local surf schools and volunteers to deliver our sessions on a weekly basis for three years, including some indoor winter sessions for when the water is a bit too chilly! This money will also help us support with transport to ensure this is not a barrier to accessing our sessions. The club is so important to continuing the benefits that young people gain from our courses and in helping them deal with anxiety and feel more confident. We have over 50 members in our surf club and this is growing all the time, this fund will be beyond helpful in keeping our club surfing and very much appreciated alongside the fundraising efforts of all our volunteers, parents, young people and supporters!

Moment of Pride

Our awesome young people & volunteers make our projects so great. Lots of our young people go on to become our volunteers, helping others to learn to surf & have fun in the waves. Our volunteers are crucial; they brave the Welsh rain & seas week after week to bring encouragement & positive vibes.
