Skills for life

Funding level: Up to £1,000

Description

Hospital Radio Tunbridge Wells has been providing bedside entertainment and information to patients in hospitals in West Kent & East Sussex since 1961. The service is entirely run by volunteers and constantly needs additional people. In 2011 the charity faced closure as the Kent & Sussex Hospital closed and the team lost their studio facilities. The new hospital was a PFI building project and the NHS Trust was unable to offer the team any space for studio facilities, so the volunteers took on the challenge of raising enough funds to pay rent on some commercial premises.

The service continues to run today serving patients in the Tunbridge Wells Hospital at Pembury and Tonbridge Cottage Hospital. Most of the programmes can also be heard online via the charity's website hrtw.org.uk but additional volunteers are needed to help present more live radio shows and help with future fundraising to keep the service on air.

We need to run a recruitment campaign and reach out to the local community to get more volunteers, the funding we are seeking to obtain from the Aviva Community Fund would pay for our website, online hosting, phone and broadband, all of which are needed to enable us to reach out to the community to attract more volunteers, so please support us with your votes. You can also contact us directly to volunteer for the charity.

Many of our volunteers have gone onto work in the media industry, so the training you receive when you become a member of our team could be considered skills for life. There are members who admit they have gained a great deal out of being involved with Hospital Radio Tunbridge Wells, it helps give people confidence and a sense of giving something back to the community.
