Skills for life

Funding level: £10,001 to £25,000

Ladbrooke JMI School is a thriving one form entry primary school in the heart of Potters Bar, Hertfordshire. Three years ago we made a conscientious decision to develop our wrap around provision providing parents with an early morning club and an after school club. This was a bold move as the school is a physically small building and we had no way of knowing how popular the clubs would be. Our morning club is going from strength to strength as the school hall is used and this provides a big enough space for our children every morning. Unfortunately the same cannot be said for our after school club. We have the demand, in fact, every year we have an increased number and the children love going. Our problem is our current space is just too small and the only other space we have is our school hall. If we use the hall then other clubs like netball, dance, football, orchestra etc. would cease to happen. Comments from parents in our recent survey included
…‘The after school club is a work changer for me. Before it was available I was unable to commit to jobs out of the Potters Bar area on Mondays and Fridays. My daughter loves it, and moans if I pick her up early’
…I’m reliant on the club due to the hours my husband and I work. My child loves going there and would like to go more often. He enjoys all the activities and the fact that the current facility (Owl House) is away from the classrooms it doesn’t feel like he’s at school’
…’It would be great to have more children at the club as the limit is 15 spaces at present and Wednesday and Fridays get booked very quickly. If there were more spaces I would be able to book every day I needed’
…’My child loves attending Owls Club. It is one of the highlights of his week. The staff are fantastic and he always comes home with amazing creations. The club encourages him to develop his imagination, creative skills and social interactions with peers in different year groups and classes’
We are proposing to build a new building which will house our after school club as a main priority. The space will be a different space to a usual classroom, so the children can feel that can relax, chill, make new friends and try activities they have never tried before. Another benefit of the space will be that we can offer workshops and training for parents and members of the community. The more we can help our parents in understanding the changing curriculum, the more they can support their children at home. Win, win! Our final benefit is that the space will provide a separate space to rent out during evenings, weekends and holidays. This will bring welcomed funds into the school that we can then use to support children more effectively.
Our project is expecting to cost around £120,000. We have spent three years raising money through the school fund and the fantastic efforts of our parents which has meant we have reached over three quarters of our target but time is now running out and we desperately need to find the final funds to make this happen. Your vote really will make a difference. Thank you!

Moment of Pride

Ladbrooke JMI school is a popular school in Potters Bar. We are proud of the achievements of our children both academically and socially. Whilst achievement is strong across the school, probably the most important aspect is the behaviour and conduct of the children which is second to none.
