Description

Our project is to ensure that our Community Shop is sustained over the winter of 2018/2019.
The village shop serves a community of 250 houses. During the summer the shop benefits from caravanners at a local caravan site and visitors to Grafham Water, a large reservoir/nature reserve, the increased summer income sees us through the winter when village custom alone sees a dip in sales. This year, because of a change in the caravan site operation, our summer income has declined. We are working hard to increase our income but this winter will be difficult, while we search for different markets.
The shop is a non-profit making community project, that is sustained by volunteers who work in the shop and run the management committee.
The shop provides:
• A local facility, reducing car journeys that would otherwise be made and the associated environmental impact.
• Support to local suppliers. For example, the shop stocks locally made jams and chutney’s, rape oil products, meat products, bread and microbrewery beer. We also stock pictures painted by local artists.
• Contributes to the health and well-being of our village. Our village has very limited public transport to surrounding towns. Consequently, there are people who find it difficult to get out of the village and rely on the shop. This includes elderly people and stay at home mothers with preschool children.
• By employing two part time managers, the shop provides local employment.
• Provides a place were teenagers can enhance their people and customer service skills. We often have teenagers volunteering in the shop as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Award programme. The shop also enables young people to build a CV attractive to future employers or educational institutions.
