Skills for life

Funding level: £1,001 to £5,000

Established in 1968, the 14th Eastleigh Scout and Guide Band (“The Spitfires”) provides musical opportunities for children all over Hampshire. Made up of around 50 members of the Scout Association and Girlguiding UK, the band performs around 25 engagements a year all over the UK, ranging from concerts and carnivals to parades and military tattoos.

The band is led by a fantastic team of bandmasters and leaders who all volunteer many hours per week, and the dedication of this leadership team enables the young members of the band to improve and flourish in their musical education, whilst having fun and entertaining our audiences across the UK. All uniform, tuition and where possible instruments, are provided to all members at no additional cost, and this helps the band to be accessible to all.

At a time when music in schools is under scrutiny, we are lucky to have a growing ensemble of enthusiastic and highly talented young people who all share a love of music and performing. The band isn’t just a group of people who come together to play music – they are a family; a family that promotes teamwork, self-confidence, health and well-being, and provides young people with skills for life. Most of all, we have fun with everything we do.

Over the past few years the band has grown at such a rate that we have run out of instruments to loan new players, and a donation from Aviva would enable us to take more young people into our training band “The Merlins”, the main concert and the marching band. We have no auditions – as soon as our training band members join, they start performing to the public. We estimate that around 25,000 people would benefit from the band’s entertainment in 2019, and it would be absolutely fantastic if we could allow some more young people to be part of this musical journey.

Moment of Pride

The enthusiasm and enjoyment our young people share making music together is incredible. From the moments when first notes are blown on their instrument, to seeing them smile as they first march out in front of thousands of people, we love making magical musical memories to last a lifetime.
