Environment

Funding level: £1,001 to £5,000

Description

The parish council is in the process of creating a community orchard at a local village site that is currently an overgrown field with limited wildlife value. Contracts have already been awarded for the entrance and gateways. Funding from Aviva would allow the provision of an access friendly path through the main orchard area and picnic / event area. The full cost of the path will be £6220.80. We already have £1220.80 towards this. The site will be used by the local primary school for environmental studies and provide an important green space for the wider community, allowing everyone close access to the wildlife that the orchard will attract. At one time orchards were common, often at the centre of village life and a cornerstone to rural economy, but in recent years over 70% have been lost and in 2007 traditional orchards were designated as a priority habitat in the UK biodiversity action plan. With the advice from Essex Wildlife Trust will ensure maximum benefit for wildlife and people. The orchard site contains an existing raised area that forms a natural amphitheatre. We plan to use the orchard for community events for all ages, such as Easter egg hunts, outdoor plays and concerts, wildlife events such as moth evenings, apple days, wassailing, story telling, teddy bear picnics, and teaching traditional rural skills such as hedge laying, pruning etc. The path will enable access by everyone including wheelchair users and pushchairs in all weathers. This new site will enable future generations to enjoy the pleasures of the orchard for many years to come. The Aviva funding for the path would enable the uses and benefits of the orchard to be made available to the whole community, rather than just the able bodied.
