Skills for life

Funding level: Up to £1,000

For over 25 years Fèis a' Bhaile has offered top quality traditional music, song, dance and drama tuition to young people in Inverness aged 8 to 18. Gaelic for 'The Town Youth Festival' Fèis a' Bhaile offers young people a valuable, accessible and enjoyable opportunity to develop new creative skills and learn about traditional Highland music and culture.

Our annual October week is a popular fixture in the Inverness youth arts calendar, offering a wide range of group tuition activities including fiddle, accordion, pipes, clarsach (harp), drumming, guitar, mandolin, song, shinty, art, dance, drama and groupwork. Workshops are streamed by ability, meaning participants can develop their existing skills as well as try new instruments and activities at beginner level. Participants do not need to be able to speak Gaelic to take part in our fèis, rather we aim to spark their interest in the language and wider culture by offering informal and fun taster sessions. Our event brings around 60 young people from across Inverness and further afield together each year, and it is amazing to see the progress participants can make in just 5 days of workshops.

All young people aged 8 to 18 are welcome to our event and we aim to keep participant fees as low as possible to make our activities accessible. We offer family discounts where more than one child from a family attends our events, and welcome young people with additional support needs, making sure suitable support is in place. We hire professional traditional musicians with experience in teaching young people to ensure a quality experience for our participants, and operate a robust Child Protection Policy to safeguard their wellbeing and safety.

We are run by a voluntary committee and although we regularly run fundraising events in the community we are facing rising tutor fees and venue hire costs. An Aviva Community Fund award would directly support our October 2018 event costs and enable us to keep our participant fees at 2017 levels. The wider impact of this would be that Fèis a’ Bhaile can continue to offer accessible cultural activities, helping young people to engage with and develop skills in Highland music, art, dance and sport in an informal, safe and supportive setting.
