Description

Family Friends provides early help support to families in need in the Windsor and Maidenhead area. Our vision is that all families living in our area are able to thrive while their children are growing up, however tough the challenges are that they face. We help children to develop their emotional wellbeing, we support parents to develop their parenting skills and we’re a friend to the family. We do this through our professional family support workers and also through our volunteers. Our service is free and confidential. We run both one to one and group sessions.
Among the many important activities we run, we provide support sessions for children who have been victims or witnesses of domestic abuse. All of our work contributes to those suffering from mental distress and is designed to improve their emotional well-being, whether their self-esteem has been damaged, if they are struggling with confidence, attachment issues, or if they are just feeling unable to cope with life generally. We particularly focus on anxiety and we offer group sessions to children.
Our project is for young people under the age of 13 to provide them with online materials to help them cope with a range of challenges they may be dealing with such as anxiety, low self-esteem, bullying and managing anger. There is a need in our community to make ourselves more accessible and by providing some of these learning materials digitally, it will help us to widen our reach and increase the numbers of children we are able to support with our expertise. Some of the wards in our area, including Clewer North and Clewer South Datchet, Furze Platt, fall within the 30% most deprived neighbourhoods in the country on the Income Deprivation Affecting Children Index, as listed by the Department for Communities and Local Government. We would be fulfilling a need to provide access to important learning materials for parts of the borough such as these.
We will be creating a number of videos based upon the type of support the child and their family can access through our services. They’ll demonstrate, for example, milkshake breathing – our technique to use in times of worry and anxiety. The idea is that parents and their children will be able to come to our website and find a page dedicated to these learning materials.
These new videos will be available on a dedicated webpage for parents and their children to use any time, along with text-based materials – designed to supplement and enhance each other. The materials will be useful for both parents and children who have are looking for tools and techniques, and for those who are familiar but need to refer back for a reminder.
The project will be the first step in a longer term plan to produce a bank of online educational materials for the children and mums and dads we support. We envisage that this initial work as phase one in developing videos for our website, with longer term aims to create additional clips and content on a wider range of areas.

Because we make a positive impact which changes the lives of the families we work with, providing a type of support that is otherwise unavailable. This project will expand our support into a web-based format for the first time, enabling us to reach more families and those that need help instantly.
