York is a city that is rich in its cultural heritage assets and is a beacon in the north of England for tourism. The city is situated in North Yorkshire – a county with a rich heritage offer and the city includes some of the most important visitor attractions in the country; York Minster, the National Railway Museum and the Jorvik Viking Centre as well as an array of famous shops, pubs and restaurants all set in a beautiful historic landscape.

However these heritage sites in York and North Yorkshire do not escape from problems with crime - war memorials, museums, historical artefacts, churches, ancient battle sites, castles and stately homes can all be affected by criminal activity.

Heritage crime is any offence which harms the value of heritage assets and their settings. It covers a wide variety of criminal activity which damages assets of historical interest and can lead to the loss of a piece of a community's heritage forever.

York and North Yorkshire Heritage Watch is a non-profit organisation created to protect York and North Yorkshire’s historical sites, monuments and artefacts from heritage crime through the active involvement of the community. .

The York and North Yorkshire Heritage Watch scheme, supported by North Yorkshire Police and Historic England, operates an intelligence and best practice sharing platform, connecting heritage/ tourism sites, stakeholders and law enforcement across the City of York and the North Yorkshire Police area. The Watch scheme seeks to improve visibility and information sharing across urban and rural communities to reduce heritage crime and provide greater reassurance.

The Aviva Community Fund will allow the Heritage Watch scheme, which currently exists as an informal stakeholder group, to become a formalised, professional social enterprise. The funding will then be used to deliver the scheme across the whole of North Yorkshire and allow the scheme to become sustainable; creating a legacy of crime prevention and deterrence across the county. The scheme will provide training, share intelligence and organise events and conferences to promote an awareness and increase communities understanding of heritage crime.

The York and North Yorkshire Heritage Watch is an innovative scheme which seeks to conserve our cultural heritage for future generations - we would dearly appreciate your vote!

Thank you!
