Skills for life

Funding level: £1,001 to £5,000

Dumfries Saints Rugby Club have undertaken an ambitious programme to develop a team of eight to ten highly skilled UKCC Level 2 Qualified Coaches to deliver curricular and extra curricular rugby sessions in 5 local Secondary Schools and their Primary School feeder Hubs.

These coaches will comprise of Assistant Development Officers, Modern Apprentices and Community Coaches delivering on average 180 hours of coaching and planning a month to an average 2000 participating school pupils a month for the duration of the school year. This will be done under the supervision of Dumfries Saints Rugby Development Manager Rudi Urbach.

The funding to pay the staff wages for this project comes from 2 sources, part from a Service Level Agreement between Dumfries Rugby Club, the Scottish Rugby Union and the Local Council and part from the Maxwellton High School of Rugby which is supported by Cashback for Communities. Dumfries Rugby Club match the funds paid by the other organisations through our ongoing fund raising activities.

The Coach Education Programme will involve Level 1 and Level 2 UKCC Coaching Courses, First Aid Courses, Safeguarding Courses, Level 1 Refereeing Courses, Strength & Conditioning Courses and ongoing Continuous Professional Development Courses.

It is the intention of the club to pay the course fees and travel expenses of those attending. As many of these courses are in central belt this may include occasional overnight accommodation. It is to cover all these Coach Education costs that we seek Aviva Community Funding.

We estimate this project will involve 50 individual training opportunities between December 2017 and December 2018 at a total cost of £2500.

Once fully qualified these coaches will be able to deliver safer, higher quality coaching sessions that will engage more young people and increase participating in sporting activity. This will provide both the coaches and the young people with skills for life and increase their health and well being.

Dumfries Saints Rugby is an inclusive organisation that supports participation from all ages, abilities, genders and ethic backgrounds.
