Description

In August 2017 Aviva's support enabled us to run a one-week Summer School to introduce and teach the art of church bell ringing to a group of 20 students, interested in learning this new skill. At the end of the week two thirds could ring a bell unaided and 10 passed their Level 1 Learning the Ropes assessments.

We would like to offer a second one-week course in 2018 to introduce bell ringing to another 20 students of 12 years upwards during the summer holidays in London.

Many churches have a band of bell ringers who practice one evening each week and ring out their bells before service and to support local and national events. Bell ringers come from a wide range of age groups and lifestyles, including non churchgoers, who enjoy the activity, the music of the bells, the social side and the constant challenge to improve their skills both as individuals and as a team.

A one-week course enables new ringers to learn the physical skills of ringing a church bell, to understand the system of English-style method ringing which creates the music, and to experience the social side of ringing.

It also will enable students to make rapid progress through one-to-one tuition in a supportive environment where they can share their experiences with other students and with expert ringers.

Following the course, those attending will be able to join local tower bands across London for regular ringing and to develop their skills further.

Church bell ringing is a rewarding art, involving both physical and mental skills, which has the power to bring people and communities together.

In addition to hands-on learning, the one-week course will include additional sessions to introduce students to the heritage, technology and science behind church bell ringing.

Those who are interested will be supported to achieve their Level 1 Learning the Ropes Assessment, during the week. This covers basic bell handling and is the first step on the pathway to becoming an experienced ringer.
