Community support

Funding level: £10,001 to £25,000

Northamptonshire Search & Rescue (NSAR) are a group of trained unpaid volunteers who are on call 24hrs a day, 365 days a year to assist Northamptonshire Police and other emergency services with locating, treating and evacuating vulnerable missing people, inc children, elderly and despondent persons.

We search for people from all social backgrounds and many are vulnerable members of our community. Our most frequent searches are for Children, Teenagers, Dementia, Alzheimer's, sufferers, Despondent and Mental health sufferers. Even if the missing person is not located, it still gives great comfort to family and friends to know that something is being done to help find their loved ones.

When we are called to search for missing people we run the operation from our onsite Incident Control Vehicle (ICU). Our current vehicle is now very old and is starting to become very unreliable . We have had issues getting the vehicle to start and need to be able to rely on the ICU getting to the search area because the vehicle is the central focus for searchers and members of the public. It enables us to instigate an effective search for the missing person and provides support to the missing person's family and friends.

We have secured funding to purchase a vehicle and now need to raise money to fit out the van to our specific requirements. We have researched the estimated costing to fit out the van to meet our needs. The final figure is dependent on exactly what specifications we go for but as usual we are trying to run things on a very meagre budget and we think we can achieve our goal with around £20,000 to £22,000.

The funding would be transform our new van into a Incident Control Vehicle and the work involved would include:-
-re-spraying the outside of the vehicle to appropriate colours
-fitting an awning to protect people from the weather
-fitting suitable lights to enable working at night
-fitting of hard flooring and interior framing.
-building of a search managers work area
-building of equipment storage area
-miles of cabling for radio etc !!!
-fitting additional batteries to enable us to run equipment

Once competed the vehicle will enable us to provide communication with the searchers and Police, plan our search (provide digital & hardcopy mapping), store emergency equipment (medic kits, safety equipment), provide refreshments, shelter and comfort to maintain the wellbeing of participants and to offer support and help to relatives of the missing person.

It is not possible to be specific on how many people will benefit from this project as we do not know how many call outs we will get in the future but in 2016 we were involved in 42 call outs and so far this year we have been involved at 22 call outs. We get lots feedback from families and friends of the missing person and it is all good !!!

Here are a couple of tweets taken from our website which members of the public made during a recent search:-

'You are all doing such an amazing job in looking for ******. Keep up the good work and lets hope he is found safe and well'

'Sometimes the littlest things mean the most. Thank you for sharing the card from the family of a missing youing man we found'

I hope you can see the benefit the community get from us and feel we are a worthy project to support.
