Community support

Funding level: £1,001 to £5,000

Description

Hillingdon Narrowboats Association (HNA) operates a small fleet of narrow boats to provide affordable boating & training to youth & community groups.

Our users can have truly life-enhancing experiences

-Scouts, Guides, Boys and Girls Brigades members who learn team working through boat and lock operation and “camping” together on the boats.
-Schools, who use our boats to give pupils hands-on learning about industrial and transport history
-Duke of Edinburgh's award candidates, who use our boats for their Gold Award journey and can achieve formal qualifications that demonstrate their ability to learn new and non-academic skills
-Young Offenders, who get the opportunity to participate in activities that help them overcome their alienation from society and pay back through working on our boats and the surrounding canalside areas
-People with physical & mental disabilities, who can get a real buzz out of participating in boating
-Senior Citizens' and other groups who simply enjoy the ambiance of being on the water.

Three of our boats are becoming tired and we need to redecorate and renew their interiors. Most of the work (for example painting, plumbing and electrical works, renewing fitted furniture and soft furnishings) can be and is being done by our volunteers, but we need capital support of £4,500 to
Engage professionals to supply and fit new floor coverings, so that the boats remain easy to clean and safe and hygienic for our users.
Replace life-expired refrigerators
This help will allow our boats to continue their long record of service to our community for many years to come.

Moment of Pride

I have a real passion for this HNA and the opportunity it gives individuals of all ages and abilities, to learn a new skills, work as a team, on day or residential trips enjoying the canal. To watch young people develop and grow in confidence and ability and socially is a great pleasure and honour.
