Description

Team Jak Foundation was set up in 2015 following the passisng of 15 year old teenager Jak Trueman following a brave 5 month battle with a rare form of cancer.
Whilst Jak and his family had nothing but appreciation and respect for the medical team and nurses that cared for Jak. Jak felt that there was a gap for emotional and practical support, particulary for teenage siblings and friends.

Jak had a vision for the future and asked his mum to help make it happen. He wanted a purpose built building that would offer different activities and areas that families could utilise whilst going through treatment and beyond, offer counselling and fun activities in a safe environment.

In December 2015, Jak’s Den (mark 1) was opened, this was the first centre of it’s kind in West Lothian and currently the team support approx 70 families on a regular basis through various means, we provide counselling, art therapy, activity days, pampering sessions for mum/gran, golf days for dad/granddad and family fun days.

Less than 2 years since opening, we have outgrown Jak’s Den (mark 1) and are very excited that we have secured new premises for Jak’s Den (mark2) which we hope to open in Spring 2018. We are very excited about this opportunity and the new premises will offer so much more and enable us to accopmplish more of the items on Jak’s wish list including a feature garden split into different zone’s to meet the different needs of the families we are supporting.. The bigger den will also allow us to support more children, young people and their families.

We are applying for funding from Aviva to support the outdoor project of the new den . This area will be known as Zone out@ Jak’s Den and will feature various zones:

Adventure Zone – This will incorporate a remote control boating pond and car track with a covered area where the boats and cars can be operated from.

Play Zone – Purpose built play area with slides, swings, climbing frames with safetymats.

Zen Zone – This will be an area for chilling and enjoying the garden whilst reflecting and meeting with others for a coffee and chat. This will also be a sensory

Angel Zone – This will be a quiet area, a garden of rememberance for the children and young people who have passed, the families will choose a memorial for their child in the form of a small insect/animal that will be in the garden. This area will also be surrounded by trees to offer,

Timeout Zone – This will comprise of 3 stand alone pods that will each fit approx 6-8 people. These will be multi purpose for counselling, music therapy, complimentary therapies etc and will be sound proofed to provide complete privacy.

Please help us to continue to “Create smiles and Ease the Journey” for all these families out there who have been affected by Childhood Cancer.

It is amazing to watch Team Jak grow and develop and to volunteer for such a well organised charity. The families supported have nothing but praise for the service provided. What makes this even more special is that despite her loss of her son, his mum endeavours to achieve Jak's dream and wishes.
