Funding level: £1,001 to £5,000

An international concert is planned between Coventry’s Spires Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus and the Lufthansa Orchestra and Chorus, based in Frankfurt, to be held at Coventry Cathedral on April 7th 2018.

In the centenary year of the ending of World War 1, our concert will bring together choirs and orchestras from our two countries in an enactment of peace and reconciliation through the shared joy of music in a performance of Brahms’ German Requiem.

The choirs and orchestras are all amateurs giving freely of their time and, in the case of our German guests, funding their own travel expenses. A successful AVIVA bid (up to £5,000) would be used to hire Coventry Cathedral; hire the staging for 100 singers, pay soloists and key professional musicians who will provide support; advertise the concert and encourage the local Coventry community to join us. The Cathedral seats 1,000 people. Our concert is designed to engage all citizens of Coventry and the surrounding area, including our newest arrivals, asylum seekers and refugees, in a celebration of peace and reconciliation between these two cities that share a brutal history of war. The project will enable the musicians and audience to celebrate shared values through music, particularly in Coventry's iconic Cathedral which rose from the ashes of intolerance and destruction.

"While we celebrate our diversity, what surprises me time and time again... is that we are far more united and have far more in common with each other than things that divide us." (Jo Cox's maiden speech to Parliament, June 2015.) This project will celebrate what we share in common.
