Community support

Funding level: £1,001 to £5,000

The main aims of the Project is to reduce isolation and loneliness in the elderly and increase social interaction within the community of Orrell. We propose to redevelop an existing underused area and transform it into a viewing area with seating, heating and BBQ facilities that can be used by the community to use as a social space to watch cricket and interact with each other.
We are one of the largest and most successful junior sections in our area running 2 teams at all age groups at U9S, U11S, U13S, and U15S age groups as well as girls teams and 4 Senior teams, We recognise that we offer a lot to the younger part of our community so especially wish to organise some events to invite older members of the community to the club for some food, drink and a chat with each other, the rest of our community who attend our club, players and junior members whilst watching a game of cricket.

By redeveloping the viewing area we aim to provide a safe, comfortable and appealing place for parents, grandparents and visiting supporters to watch their families play cricket whilst also encouraging the more elderly members of our community to come along and enjoy spending time in a family friendly environment and therefore addressing the isolation issues faced.

The seating and heating would ensure that the area is comfortable and the inclusion of planters will allow us to make the area more appealing whilst providing an opportunity for any keen green fingered members of the community to get involved in the club by tending to the area. It may be that new friends get together along with our junior members to spend time together in maintaining the area that would be within a space that matters to the community.

We currently arrange several social events for the community which include an annual bonfire & firework display, community 6 a side cricket competition, a Christmas party for 20 under privileged children in the Orrell area run with the support of Wigan council.
Our annual last night of the proms event brings around 3000 of our local community together at the club.
These events have been very successful over the last few years as our engagement with the community through social media and in the 'local life magazine' and word of mouth has increased.

We are aware that as a club in the heart of the community we have a major role to play in addressing the increased social issues that relate to both the young and old. We feel that this Project would be a great way to help achieve this whilst also supporting the current community events that we run.

It is expected that the Project will take around 6 months to fully complete.
We would propose to promote the project the community of the Project by advertising at the Club, via the Club social media pages, also within the Local Life Magazine and also through our data base of community contacts that we have through our membership and last night of the proms events.
