Community support

Funding level: £5,001 to £10,000

Description

Our project will be called ‘Heart Safe’

The project will enable us to work with an extensive range of different groups of children and adults within 4 large community halls which have multiple uses. These include Brownies, Guides, Cubs, Scouts, after school clubs, mums and tots, community choir, yoga, keep fit, homework clubs and several more.

We know that 12 young people die each week in the UK of Sudden Cardiac Arrest and yet there is no legal requirement for schools or community facilities to have a defibrillator on site. Research shows us that where a defibrillator and CPR is used within the first 5 minutes of a collapse, chances of survival increase from 6% to 74%. An ambulance takes, on average 8 minutes to reach a casualty.

Many community venues and schools tell us that they really want to invest in a defibrillator and training but that it isn’t possible due to cost and having someone to support them through the process and offer accessible training.

We will place a defibrillator and associated accessories in each of the 4 chosen locations, provide formal Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and defibrillator training for 64 adults and run interactive fun sessions for 240 children which will enable them to learn basic life support skills. Our project will aim to identify and train at least 1 adult from each of the groups, thereby enabling them to use their new skill and confidence to cascade to other leaders and children, benefiting many others. We will offer a range of age appropriate children’s sessions, thus, engaging with attendees from all the groups.

In each of the 4 community halls which span the county of Cheshire, we will hold a whole community fun and awareness day. These large-scale events will enable anyone within the local community to come along, learn about the heart, enjoy some exercise taster sessions, enjoy healthy food and smoothies and learn how to save lives and use a defibrillator.

By working with each of the groups who use the centres, we are enhancing communication across all the teams and creating a vibrancy amongst them. The open days will enable the wider community to access the centre in a relaxed and fun way and, thereby, promote social engagement. We are equipping adults with lifelong skills to manage a health emergency and creating a generation of young people who will have lifelong skills and confidence to react in an emergency situation and the confidence to use a defibrillator. The benefit to the whole local community is that there is a vital piece of equipment available to them for the long-term which can be used to save a life and reduce the shocking statistics of deaths in the community due to a delayed response in receiving immediate first response treatment.

Moment of Pride

We are proud to have funded over 1,000 defibrillators, trained 38,000 people in life-saving skills and ultimately made our communities heart safe. We are a tiny charity with big aspirations and are proud of all the volunteers and youth groups who have worked collaboratively to put this bid together.
