Community support

Funding level: £10,001 to £25,000

At the Knutsford Heritage Centre our staff help visitors to understand the rich varied heritage associated with Knutsford which has been home to many famous people, including for example Elizabeth Gaskell, Henry Royce and Alison Uttley , boasting many impressive Grade 2 listed buildings. We host 2 galleries, beautiful gardens & shop; providing exhibitions, demonstrations, and guided town walks/talks. We catalogue artefacts & maintain archives.

The centrepiece is our Knutsford Tapestry (see photograph); set in 3 panels more than 13 metres long; which was created over 4 years by 3000 local people to celebrate Knutsford in 2000 . We also house a collection of Royal May Day Crowns stretching back to the late 1800s.

Our objective is to provide benefits to Knutsford residents & UK/overseas visitors by preserving/ protecting/promoting Knutsford's rich diverse heritage; attracting 10,000+ visitors/year providing information for casual visitors, and an educational resource for local schools/community/youth groups

Our five photographs show:

2: The Green Man in our Courtyard
3: The Knutsford Royal May Queen 2017 in the Tapestry gallery
4: The Knutsford Millennium Tapestry

We are now stretched for space, and in order to grow we have embarked upon a project to extend our Centre.

We have secured a long-term lease from Monckton Estates to extend into a disused carpet shop next door to our main Heritage Centre building. Internal plans will be presented to the Trustees for approval at our meeting in mid-October 2017.

We are looking to keep community spirit alive from this generation to the next with a regeneration project that will see this former carpet shop refurbished to become a state-of-the-art extension to our existing Heritage Centre.

On the ground floor we plan to have our archives on display, touch screens, informational boards , public meeting rooms (including an area for schools to use), kitchen, WC and disabled access facilities.

Upstairs our plans include the provision of an area reserved for personal research and study, a staff office and storage spaces for our archives and collections.

By regenerating this old building we will be able to support our local community, and provide valuable space for community events and public research.

We are looking for a major benefactor to come on board to help us fund the delivery of our exciting plans. We hope that AVIVA will be able to support our funding bid, either in full or in part, for our Heritage Centre extension.
