Description

We are aiming to get funding to try and buy additional golf equipment for the junior members of the Mountain Ash Golf Club and to assist with their future training, and encourage more members in the area.

In February 2016, Mountain Ash Golf Club started an initiative to try and get young members of the surrounding community to learn to play golf. Since launching the initiative we have had over 100 children come along to the scheme and now have over 50 regular junior members coming along to weekly training sessions. The majority of the members are all under 11 years old, and we are looking to try and encourage more members, particularly in the 11 - 18 year old age group, as well as increasing numbers in the under 11 category.

Although some of the members have now got their own junior golf clubs, which have been bought for them as Christmas and birthday presents, we have a shortfall in the equipment we need to provide the training for the children and need to raise funds to purchase both golf clubs (both iron and plastic clubs (for the tots) as well as balls and training equipment such as chipping nets, practice mats etc.

Weather is obviously an issue when playing golf outdoors and we are also looking to purchase a large gazebo structure whereby the children will be able to stand under this and be able to practice their golf driving skills, whilst remaining dry.

The members of Mountain Ash Golf Club have been very kind to the junior group and have raised funds to buy the children shirts and baseball caps and have been selling their old golf clubs with the funds going towards the junior section and this has helped tremendously.

As well as looking to raise additional funds for equipment, we would like to be able to use some of the funds so that we can arrange for a PGA professional to come into the club occasionally to help train the children further. At present we receive a small amount of funding from the Welsh Golf Union, but the remaining costs are being covered by the parents.

The club is located at Mountain Ash in the Cynon Valley, within the County of Rhonnda Cynon Taf, and golf coaching in this area is very limited and can be expensive, and this is restricting the number of members that are taking up the game in the area.

We, as a club, are keen to encourage children to try the sport, and are looking to contact locals schools and youth groups such as the brownies/guides and beavers/cubs/scouts, but our limited equipment is restricting us from doing this.

We have a number of volunteers who are happy to teach the children to learn to play golf and learn how to use the equipment correctly, as a golf club can be dangerous if the child is not shown how to use it correctly, and safety of the children, coaches and volunteers is paramount to avoid any accidents. We require more plastic golf clubs, soft balls and practice balls for the beginners and tots to learn on as the number of people we have wanting lessons exceeds the amount of equipment we have available to us, and we would like to get more children in the locality involved in coaching.

The weekly lessons offered to the children at Mountain Ash Gold Club are free, although if there is bad weather, we do hire a local sports hall, and then we charge just £1 per child to cover the cost of hiring the hall.

To encourage children to join the golf club, under 11's receive free membership, and then between the ages of 11-18, the club charges an annual fee of £50, which is very attractively priced to make it affordable for parents if their child does enjoy the sport.

We would be most grateful if you would consider the Mountain Ash Golf Club Juniors and Tots group for one of the Aviva Community Awards, as the funding we would receive would go towards purchasing more equipment and enable us to try and encourage more members of the community to come along to our group and have fun, whilst learning new skills and making new friends

My children have been members of the scheme since it started and it is lovely to see the progress they have made over the last 18 months, the new friends they have made, both with the other children and with the coaches. I am proud of all involved in the scheme and hope we can continue into the fut
