The Music Department will replace one concert grand, one baby grand and three upright pianos which are more than forty years old and beyond repair. These instruments are in demand as music in the school is actively promoted through choirs, orchestras, ensembles and bands, which enrich the curriculum. The Music Department is incredibly successful both in the local area and in National competitions. Our Chamber Choir was awarded the highest marks of any choir competing in the Southend Music Festival in November 2016. In Spring 2017, our Big Band played at Disneyland Paris and several ensembles played at the Music for Youth festival in Aldeburgh. Novem Consort, one of our ensembles competing at the regional festival progressed through to the National competition at Birmingham Town Hall in July 2017 and have since also been invited to the highest level of achievement, performing at the MfY Prom at the Royal Albert Hall on 14 November 2017. Novem Consort will also be giving a free lunchtime concert at the Albert Hall on 13 October, invited again by Music for Youth following their performance in Birmingham. We have many other ensembles, including a full Orchestra, Wind Band and Big Band, plus smaller instrumental ensembles run by talented students. We welcome help from the local community and are lucky to have a visiting musician lead our Gospel Choir, who have performed at two local church concerts in the past six months.
Our school has nurtured several exceptionally gifted and talented musicians, with fourteen students over the past four years going on to study Music as single or joint honours at University or Conservatoire. We also have one student who has been a member of the Royal College of Music Junior Department for four years and she has just been awarded a choral scholarship for Queens College Oxford for Autumn 2018. Two students have recently been invited to join the National Youth Choir of Great Britain. Southend hosts two music festivals annually enabling over fifty musicians from our school to perform in public individually and in groups. Use of our pianos by the Southend Girls Choir, for example, enables girls in the local and school community to sing in prestigious venues such as the Royal Albert Hall, St. Martin-in-the-Fields, and Claridges. Through membership of the Southend Girls' Choir, one of our students sang in the 'Diamond Choir' at the National Service of Thanksgiving for HM The Queen's Diamond Jubilee at St. Paul's Cathedral in June 2012. Local musical theatre and operatic societies use our facilities for amateur productions. We recognise that instruments of the highest quality are a pre-requisite to continue to nurture and develop gifted and talented musicians in the school and local community.

Our facilities are used extensively by the local community such as the Southend Girls Choir, a local community choir, local uniformed groups, musical theatre and operatic societies.
