Community support

Funding level: Up to £1,000

Description

For nearly 40 years the Lions Club of Gillingham, Mere & Shaftesbury have raised many thousands of pounds for the benefit of the local community and those is need; much of the money we raise has come from our annual Christmas Appeal using a tractor-drawn sleigh with Father Christmas. This trailer has not only raised funds for our Charity, it has also brought enormous joy to families as it has travelled around the housing estates in Shaftesbury, Gillingham, Mere, Motcombe, Bourton, Zeals and some local junior schools.
The trailer is a converted farm trailer with an old brewery dray curtain sides and roller shutter door obtained from a local farmer. It was already quite old when we started using it; however, it continues to serve its purpose well - but the protective side curtains are now beyond repair. The two attached photos show the float in action and the state of the existing, dilapidated, side curtains that have to be replaced.

We now need to replace the curtain sides with modern ones, supplied by Wessex Vehicle Services, at a fitted cost of around £1600. Most of the repairs we have completed have been through the efforts of our members; however, this size of cost is beyond our means and all the money we raise is contained within our Charity account (Charity Number: 279561), which we are not allowed to use it for equipment purchases. Consequently we are seeking sponsorship.

We would be extremely grateful if you would consider making a contribution towards this project. It would help to ensure the communities around North Dorset and South West Wiltshire continue to enjoy the sight of Santa visiting for many years to come.

Location: North Dorset, Shaftesbury, United Kingdom

It's also brought enormous joy to families for several generations as it has travelled around the housing estates in the area, apart from raising charity funds. We've had parents, who remember seeing Santa in their own youth, bringing their children along; now we are getting the first grandparents!
