Health and wellbeing

Funding level: £5,001 to £10,000

Description

Currently the only thing that delays the degenerative nature of Parkinson's is exercise in that it gived protection to the dying dopamine producing brain cells. Dopamine is needed to make the part of the brain that controls movement, balance, multi-tasking and implicit learning work. By the time Parkinson's is diagnosed at least 50% of these brain cells are dear or dying and up to 70% of dopamine production is affected. The Swindon & District Branch provide a 5 day Exercise Programme that The Parkinson's Services at GWH refer their patients to. See DVD link:

This programme consists of Walking Football, 2 Balance & Exercise Classes **, 2 Tai Chi Classes, a special seated class for those with difficulty standing** and Dance by Parkinsons with an instructor from Swindon Dance Trained in Dance for Parkinson's.

** indicated class designed by Parkinson's physiotherapists at GWH.

The Swindon & Shrivenham NHS CCG were helping fund these classes until the new tax year with £11K per year when their budget cuts resulting in us loosing this funding. Our etimated cost for this year to run these classes is £!7K.

These classes are critical for the well being of both people with Parkinson's and their carers. We need to be able to continue and develop these classes.
