Description

IBC (Islington Boat Club) is the only watersports provider in the Borough of Islington. It is unique in its offer both on-site at the City Road Basin on the Regents Canal but also, in the great outdoors when it delivers residential activities away from its centre. IBC’s high quality activities have been developed and refined over 45 years to address personal and social development through the medium of sport. Originally IBC was seen as a place for children and young people to enjoy boating; as an adventure playground on water but over the years, this has changed; it has developed with the emphasis placed on gaining skills, building confidence, team work and the personal development for people of all ages and walks of life.
Funding is required towards the cost of the Upperdeckers program for 2018 to enable IBC to continue to support isolated vulnerable people in Islington and the surrounding areas.

Islington Upperdeckers will take place at Islington Boat Club from April to November 2018 and we envisage to engage 400+ people over the age of 50 each year.

Your funding will allow the Upperdeckers to meet every Tuesdays for 40 weeks per year, but also to expand the number of hours that we deliver training. Previously, the Upperdecker’s met weekly for 2 hours, we wish to increase this to 4hrs of free watersports sessions, to accommodate the demand (from both individuals and partner groups who wish to bring along large groups of isolated vulnerable older people, many of whom are not confident to attend on their own initially).

The sessions will continue to deliver social ‘Get Togethers’, confidence building training, inter-generational activities and opportunities for older people to have their voices heard through the now in place Upperdeckers user group committee.

Each week the Upperdeckers get the opportunity to participate in: Sailing - Kayaking - Powerboating - Narrowboating - Bell boating – Mountain Biking and Yoga. In addition, we would like to be able to offer the Upperdeckers some special days; days of which they can all look forward too. These will be organised with the help of the Upperdeckers user group committee; whether it be intergenerational days where they train alongside youth club members, family days so they can bring family members (some of which have already joined the IBC youth club in 2016) - Exchange visits with other organisations, away weekend trips for off-site training (2016 they went to Wales for a weekend for kayak training) and team building sessions - Sessions with project partners; nutritionists, health professionals, stop smoking workshops etc

For those who just want to come along to have tea, cake and befriend other like-minded people then this is fine too. Once they see others (their own age and ability they slowly grow the confidence to give it a go... they never look back - we have testimonial proof).

Upperdeckers have gone on to volunteer with us both on sessions and on other projects such as skippering narrowboat trips and volunteering at our youth club where one is now setting up a community kitchen. Some have brought their children/grandchildren to our youth club, sharing their new-found passion.
By engaging local people in planning sessions, problem solving and taking responsibility for equipment etc., they learn new skills which are transferrable to their social and study networks.

This project will encourage and facilitate enjoyable accredited sporting activities for older people (50+) to increase confidence, gain new life skills and live a healthier lifestyle overall by providing:
- Social gatherings on and off the water - Exercise and confidence building programmes to reduce isolation and to build confidence recognised qualifications - Volunteering opportunities - Inter-generational initiatives
