Funding level: £10,001 to £25,000

GWSR New Visitor Centre at Winchcombe Station, Gloucestershire in 2017.

This project requests £25,000 toward the £75,000 cost of fit out and furnishing of a new Visitor Centre to be built in 2017 - see picture 1.

The GWSR PLC is a steam railway run by its 900 volunteers and this is unique among the UK's major Heritage Railways.

It is a PLC but pays no dividends and all surplus funds from train operations is invested in the railway's infrastructure.

The railway has received a legacy whose purpose is to provide a new purpose built visitor centre at Winchcombe station to replace the current wooden structure - see picture 2. The legacy is sufficient to build the building at a cost of £300,000 but this amount does not include fit out or furnishing.

All necessary permissions have been received and contracts entered into to start construction in January 2017 with the building shell completed before the end of the year.

The building will be constructed to resemble a Great Western Railway goods facility in order that it complements the beautiful heritage railway station at Winchcombe, which itself was removed brick by brick from Monmouth and reassembled at Winchcombe.

This project application seeks 325,000 towards the fit out and furnishing of the building. The rest of the necessary funds will come from the railway's operating income.

The multi-purpose nature of the building will allow the railway to use it amongst other things for;

1. It's many school and educational visits. We have very many school visits where children learn about the steam railways of the past and take part in WW2 evacuation events.
2. The training of our 900 volunteers whose ages range from 15-85 and who will be better able to learn and develop their skills.
3. To provide a display area where we can help the public understand the incredibly important role in the development of the UK's social history.
4. The display and exhibition of the talents of local artists and craftsmen and women at specific times.
5. The downstairs room will be available for community bookings to supplement the local village halls.
6. The upstairs room will provide a much needed accessible archive for the railway's records which will be available to the public. In addition this room will have kitchen facilities in order that catered events may take place.

More details concerning the detailed building specification and costings are available upon request.

Since 1981 the railway's unpaid volunteers have worked tirelessly to rebuild a heritage steam railway between Cheltenham and Broadway with the final link to Broadway opening in April 2018.
