Description

The NeuroMuscular Centre (NMC) is in real need of a new Physiotherapy Tilt Bed and Treatment Couch for the new Treatment Room which is currently being built (as part of an expansion plan). This equipment will enable more people with Muscular Dystrophy (MD) and associated Neuromuscular conditions to be treated by the team of specialist Physiotherapists and the Complimentary Therapist at the NMC.

The NMC is a unique and pioneering charity that provides a range of support and tangible services for people affected my MD, as well as their families and carers from across the Cheshire region and beyond. MD is a progressive muscle-wasting condition for which there is no known cure; there are 150 different types and it causes progressive muscle weakness and loss of muscle tissue. One of the key services the NMC provides is ongoing regular physiotherapy (including active exercise) as well as Complimentary Therapy. These can significantly improve an individual’s health, muscle strength and flexibility, giving them independence for longer and it can really impact positively on their quality of life.

The Physio Tilt Bed is a special Physio bed that allows physio patients to be treated lying down or in a standing position (when strapped in). There are multiple benefits in that people who spend all their time in a wheelchair can also have the opportunity to stand vertically in a supported position. This can have a huge impact on an individual. For example, it can help with the realignment of muscles and internal organs, it helps stretch out the legs, feet and spine and it can help with circulation as well as stop any fluid build-up. Additionally, it can have a positive impact psychologically. The Treatment Couch will allow for Physio treatment and Complimentary Therapy (including Aromatherapy, Body Massage, Reflexology and Manual Lymphatic Drainage) which again really impact positively on an individual’s health and wellbeing.

The NMC is currently expanding due to an increase in demand for its services. Currently the NMC supports around 1,000 people (people affected by muscular dystrophy directly and indirectly) and over 240 of these receive ongoing regular physiotherapy. Complimentary Therapy is also on offer 2 days a week from our specialist Complimentary Therapist. The latter service is also available to family members and carers who are able to receive a treatment and a break from the care of their loved one. This can be the only break they receive and so it really is a vital service.

On a day to day basis, the physio department gets very busy and over-crowded so the new beds will enable more people to receive treatment on a regular basis. Please vote for The NeuroMuscular Centre’s project “Treatment beds for people with Muscular Dystrophy” so we can continue to deliver this vital service which is not available to young people and adults with MD through statutory services. It really will enable more adults and young people with MD to receive treatment and help improve their overall health and wellbeing.
