Supporting the younger generation

Funding level: £5,001 to £10,000

Description

St Chad’s is a Church of England Voluntary Controlled day school, which serves the village of Pattingham and its outlying rural areas. The village lies 5 miles west of Wolverhampton and is easily accessible from Staffordshire, Shropshire and the West Midlands. The school prides itself on being a ‘healthy school’, encouraging the children to eat healthily for life. We recognise the importance of PE and Sport on the health and well being of children.
Encouraged by the Sport Relief Mile, our children run a mile every day on the school field. Their enthusiasm is infectious, it is a daily routine that they all enjoy and look forward to.
We have reached a stage where we need to have an all weather track to continue our mile-a-day activities. The field gets muddy and therefore slippy during wet weather and the dry soil in the summer months creates a hard running surface. An all weather track will not only enable our children to keep up their running regime all year round, but it will also open up a whole host of new opportunities for our children and the local community.
We have expressions of interest from a local running club, where there is potential for a junior running club. The track could also be used to expand the athletic opportunities available to the children and adults in the local area. There is also great potential to use the track for cycling and teaching the children how to ride their bikes in a safe place. We plan to develop links with other local schools to host and promote athletic competitions and fun runs. The project will cost £10,000 and could be completed quickly once funding is secured. This project will provide children and adults with a great space to keep fit, active and learning how exercise makes them feel better and healthier. We have 143 children on the roll who would benefit from this project, plus unlimited local people who would be able to access the track.

It has been amazing to see how the children have enjoyed and benefitted from their Mile A Day challenge, the school work extremely hard to promote healthy lifestyles and this project will secure access to the mile a day all year round. Children will learn to be active for life!
