Supporting the younger generation

Funding level: Up to £1,000

Description

The Rotary Club of Wylde Green wishes to support the national literacy programme with their Dictionary For Life (D4L) project. This involves working with four local primary schools and involves 240 pupils. The intention is for each of the children to receive an Osborne Illustrated dictionary at the end of the current school year. The Osborne Illustrated UK Standard edition Dictionary 4 Life comprises 1,000 illustrations, 10,000 entries and 20,000 definitions printed in full colour on leaflet grade paper from a sustainable forest and contains 288 pages.

The project reflects the priorities of the Rotary movement nationally by gifting dictionaries to pupils in local schools.

We will liaise with each of the schools and arrange to present the dictionaries. In some schools it will be to year 6 pupils in a full school assembly. In others it will be to Year 3 pupils so the school teachers can work with the young people and their dictionaries throughout their time at that school.

Our Club President will present each child individually with their dictionary. Each book will carry an inscription saying to whom it is presented and from whom.

As the young people go into the next stage of their education and beyond, they will always have a good dictionary as a source of reference. The project seeks to encourage independent learning and stimulate an interest in language, books and reading.
