Sport in the community

Funding level: £10,001 to £25,000

Description

The Gloucester Rugby Community Charity enhances people’s lives through sport, with a particular focus on those with social & other disadvantages.

Utilising the relationship with Gloucester Rugby, the charity is a force for positive change for citizens of Gloucestershire and beyond, reaching people at key times in their lives to make a positive impact. By using Gloucester Rugby’s brand, professional players & the stadium we deliver projects that give all young people involved the opportunity to fulfil their potential and to play a positive and active role in society.

Each season we visit more than 100 schools across Gloucestershire offering sessions to more than 12,000 young people, plus a further 2000 young people will take part in educational sessions held at Kingsholm Stadium in our dedicated classroom which provides a vibrant, exciting & stimulating place for young people to learn within the stadium.

Our programmes aims to deliver huge benefits to the local community by using the unique ability of rugby to address a broad range of issues. Many of our projects are developed in collaboration with a wide range of public service organisations, health & education providers, and local businesses.

We also recognise that young people themselves have innovative ideas & therefore play a significant part in helping us shape projects that meet specific needs.

Funded through donations, sponsorship & fundraising, the charity provides opportunities for organisations & individuals to fulfil their community, charity & volunteering objectives.
• Making a difference to all ages & abilities by using sport as a vehicle.
• Inspiring & motivating those who we engage with to enjoy a physically active & healthy lifestyle.
• Transforming attitudes to learning through educational initiatives

Without financial support we would not be able to sustain our areas of work in:
• Tag rugby
• Secondary schools
• Educational programmes
• Anti-social behaviour
• Healthy Living
• Mental health
• Support for local rugby clubs, community groups & charities
• Social inclusion
• Wheelchair rugby
• Girls/women’s rugby

Being chosen for the Aviva Community Fund would be essential in the continuation of the high impact projects we currently deliver, but also allow us to develop new programmes so that we can help even more disadvantaged areas of our community.

With the Aviva Community Fund we would like to expand our provision for women & girls. According to the National Agency for Sport the participation rates of women & girls in sport is far lower than those for men. This can be evidenced by the fact that there are 16 men’s teams in Gloucester compared to only 2 women’s teams.

We want to help challenge stereotypes & break down barriers to participation by using positive role models. We aim to provide sessions with the ultimate aim of increasing the participation rate of girls playing rugby around Gloucestershire and joining local rugby clubs. The benefits of the programme are to integrate the following core values within the sessions: Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship developing the girls as people not just as a player. Through the programme, teachers are able to benefit from the expertise of our coaches and use the opportunity to upskill & expand their knowledge of rugby & general sports delivery.

With the Women`s game being one of the fastest growing game in female sport following the success of the Women`s Rugby World Cup in we aim to increase the participation rates of all girls from year 7 to year 10 reaching over 3000 girls through the programme. With 2 female coaches delivering & acting as positive role models, it will help to inspire young girls to want to play in the premiership or even at an international level.
