Supporting the younger generation

Funding level: £10,001 to £25,000

Description

Ysgol Maesglas is a primary school based in Greenfield North Wales. Greenfield is described as an area of high deprivation by Welsh Index of Multiple deprivation (WIMD). We have worked tirelessly over the past 18 months to work with our community and engage with families. We are the first school in North Wales to gain the Investors in Families award and we are passionate about bringing home and school together.

We are now agents for the Family Learning Signature which brings families together and opens communication. Families answer 36 questions based on 4 main areas of their life and they colour code their answers. Red means they rarely do it or not at all, Yellow means some of the Family do it some of the time and Green means we all do it all or most of the time. Our aim is then to support our families in the areas they would like help with and celebrate the areas they are succeeding in.

The project aims to increase family engagement and give them ownership of the process resulting in more effective intervention and outcomes. The Family Learning Signature will be used to improve attendance, behaviour and attainment, reducing exclusions and preventing young people and families from disengaging from education. The Family Learning Signature will deliver targeted support, resources and interventions to ensure the right support meets the right families.

We would like a grant to cover some of the interventions we may be able to offer our families. Examples could be:

* We rarely spend time together and don't learn outside our home- Provide a family day out pass to Zoo or local National Trust
* We don't have resources to learn at home- Provide basic stationary, pens, pencils, paper, dictionary
* We don't take risks as a family - Family day out to climbing wall centre or activity centre
* We don't have an area in our home to learn- Provide a desk, chair, beanbag

The above are just 4 examples of interventions out of the 36 areas. A grant to help with this would not only mean we could provide activities and resources, but we will actually be making huge difference to individuals lives with such simple measures. The hope is that this momentum for learning continues and another Family Learning Signature takes places to highlight the changes. This could then move onto other Learning areas and support provided by our school and local community, such as Basic Skills for parents that we run weekly in school.

We are hoping to start this amazing programme with our new Nursery families after Christmas. This would mean supporting approximately 34 families. It is our hope that by building positive relations with parents at an early stage to their child's learning the more positive outcomes. This will then be rolled out throughout the school over the coming years.

As you know school funds are limited and we rely on our community and local businesses to support our school. This is an area we do not feel our community could help with. It requires finances and not just good will. We cannot raise funds to reach the amount we would need to make a real difference.
