Fisher Youth Theatre Group (FYTG) are creating a new, self-contained wardrobe department. This will be fit for purpose, including a workshop for costume creation and running repairs. FYTG is now in its 16th year, and the sites of our costume collection has grown, therefore, our whole provision of storage is no longer suitable, hence the need for a new wardrobe department.
Through active fundraising last year, we raised enough for us to be able to purchase a self-contained building for the wardrobe department. We require this additional funding to enable us to complete the project early in 2017. It will enable us to purchase the remainder of the fixtures and fittings, including the electrical fittings, costume railings and storage containers. With the correct storage. This will elongate the life of the costumes.
The vast majority of costumes have been designed and created by a small group of volunteers. There by making them both unique and desirable for hire or loan to other community, drama, theatre companies and schools. With the development of the costume hire service, we are able to raise additional funding, in the process building stronger community focused links.
Developing relationships have opened further opportunities to our members, enhanced awareness and membership to our group; and have built links into the diverse surrounding community. Within FYTG, we foster the ethos and supporting the local community. In the last two years we have supported The Royal British Legion, The Salvation Army Toys and Tins Appeal, and work closely with NADFAS. Bringing awareness to our young members of charitable work to support different sectors of the community in need.
FYTG operates from the historic Fisher Theatre in Bungay. Both FYTG and the Fisher Theatre are supported by groups of loyal volunteers in their running and success. Our committee, who are DBS checked and have chaperone licences, are a small but loyal group of approximately 10. Our members whose age ranges from 8 to 18 years divide into a senior and junior group, and we stage 3 shows per year, including one joint production with juniors and seniors working together, which is always highly popular. This has been shown with our current workshops for our latest production, a modern take on Dickens’ ‘A Christmas Carol’, with numbers swelling to almost 60.
We have an active inclusion policy for all young persons, whatever their backgrounds. Offering all members auditioning a cast part. Whatever the numbers. We offer a limited number of bursary places provided from donations and fundraising, for each show, to families with lower incomes. We see children growing confidence and self-esteem, develop new friendships, and learn new skills. We have seen a number of our members pursue careers in the performing arts. This is further
Supported by FYTG offering the LAMDA (London Academy of Music, Drama and Arts) syllabus to members and the wider community. To help individuals pursue a range of drama examinations, which at the higher medal levels qualify for UCAS points.
At FYTG we are most proud in helping children succeed in their ambitions with us. From the excitement that starts when they first fit their own personal costume, until they take their final bow of the closing performance. The amazing journey they travel with us and the friendships they create.
