Community support

Funding level: £10,001 to £25,000

Description

Our Grade 1 listed Abbey Church is at the centre of the village of Thorney and is surrounded by fenland. The general fabric of the church is in good condition, we recently replaced the entire nave roof and the original west front was renovated about 20 years ago. Regular worship is at the centre of the church and we are seeking to reach out to the wider community and embrace those who are outside its regular Christian events. Thorney has been designated for considerable new housing and we will seek to welcome all these new faces. Plans have been drawn up and approved by the DAC to create toilet facilities and a servery at the west end of the Abbey, the external doors will be adapted for disabled use and will provide a stunning vista of the East end of the church, the toilet being constructed to one side and the servery the other side of the entrance. Separately a small storage building has been approved in a discreet area of the churchyard. We pride ourselves in being able to leave the church open during the day and hence have many visitors together with tours arranged by the local Thorney Heritage Society and until recently we had the use of toilet facilities in a neighbouring Community Centre which has been closed and is due to be sold. The whole community will benefit from the project, we have concerts, school groups and other events, i.e. Flowers Festivals, Christmas Tree Festivals, visiting choirs, we also host external bodies, all of which prove difficult when there are no facilities. The project will cost in the region of £200,000 and any amount would be acceptable.

Thorney Abbey PCC (New Facilities Group)

Location: In the village of Thorney, Nr Peterborough, Cambridgeshire.

I am one of the churchwardens and we have a very capable architect, who was involved with the roof restoration etc. We have a good PCC and a very able working group on this project.
