Supporting the younger generation

Funding level: £1,001 to £5,000

Description

The project aims to transport children 3-17 years to Daerwynno Centre within the St. Gwynno's Forest to take part in age appropriate outdoor activities. Over 8 years of age we would offer climbing, kayaking and raft building (temperature permitting), orienteering and mountain biking.
Older groups will experience team building challenges. We have introduced this activity to improve skills of cooperation, communication and tolerance and it has become a specialism of ours.
Children under 8 years will experience story walks, pond dipping, mud sculptures, mini beast safaris etc all with qualified staff. Each group will have a minimum of 12 children and parents can accompany the younger ones. The day will run from 9.30am-3.30pm.
With a grant such as this we could take 20 groups of young people to take part in these activities, bringing them from the disadvantaged communities that surround us. These communities are statisically proven to be some of the least affluent and least healthy in Wales. We plan to give experiences that will develop self esteem, improve confidence and raise aspirations as well as improving health and well being.
The project would serve at least 240 young people. The groups will come from youth clubs, scouts, rugby, schools, special schools, referrals from Rhondda Cynon Taff Children's agencies.
The project will be coodinated by our Main Instructor and the project submitter. It will be delivered by those coordinators and our Instructors working together. All have DBS clearance and First Aid qualifications. Our team have National Qualifications including four with Teaching Certificates, a Youth Work Certificate, a Mountain Leader Award, Single Pitch Climbing Award, two Mountain Bike Leader Awards, two Kayak Leaders Award, Qualified First Aid Trainer and two experienced Social Workers. Our main instructor has a part time salary but is also one of our most dedicated volunteers, all other staff are volunteers coming from many walks of life.
We offer volunteering opportunities to people wishing to gain life or work experience. We are pleased to report that some young people have moved into training and paid employment after volunteering in Daerwynno. We encourage people to believe they can and they do.
In the past Daerwynno has been awarded the Volunteer Group of the Year Award by Interlink, runners up in the Crystal Trophy Award by RCT for working with groups with additional needs to improve their health and wellbeing. We have been awarded our Green Flag and became one of Environment Wales top ten projects for our work encouraging care of the environment. We were thrilled to welcome HRH Prince Charles to Daerwynno to see the work that was happening with children and young people.
We support other groups with similar aims e.g. by marshshalling and providing first aid cover for running events and providing activities at The Royal Welsh Show for one of our partners Llais y Goedwig. We are represented on Ynysybwl Regeneration Partnership and the Rural Development Group.
Working in partnership with RCTCBC we delivered in the Mentro Allan Project and with Natural Resources Wales we facilitated groups in the Come outside Project. Both these projects targetted hard to reach groups in the Valleys communities. We work with Keep Wales Tidy to ensure that any damage to the environment can be quickly rectified.
We visit schools to teach children about caring for the environment. We make bird boxes with the pupils and take a hive to teach about the importance of pollinators.
Our volunteers are committed to improve the lives of people in the communities around the forest and give freely of their time to achieve that aim. We are very proud of our achievements over the past twenty years having made a difference to so many people's lives.
