Sport in the community

Funding level: Up to £1,000

Description

Gillingham Anchorians has been playing hockey in the Gillingham area for over 60 years. We are committed to providing a fun, family-friendly hockey club for people of all ages and abilities in Gillingham and Rainham. We now have a thriving junior section of around 100 children, as well as running seven men’s and ladies’ teams playing each week at our Gillingham ground.
Earlier this year we laid our new England Hockey Category 2 sand-dressed pitch, specific for hockey use, at a cost in excess of £200,000. We raised a huge sum of money through own Club fundraising and donations (in excess of £75,000) and support from the Medway community and many governing bodies, including Sport England, England Hockey, the National Hockey Foundation, Kent Sport and Medway Sport.
The pitch was officially opened by the Sports Minister and our local MP, with guests including the CEO of Sport England and the Chairman of England Hockey. This generated considerable local media interest, which has allowed us to promote the Club throughout the local community. The interest has increased still further with GB gold medal success at the Rio Olympic Games.
At the end of last year we recently received ClubsFirst accreditation from England Hockey (our governing body's ClubMark award). This means we have been recognised as working towards providing a safe, effective and child-friendly hockey environment. This has allowed us to work more closely with local schools and the Gillingham and Rainham community. We are also a registered Community Amateur Sports Club.
We are actively engaged in England Hockey’s “Back to hockey” campaign, encouraging new and returning players from the local community to play hockey and actively participate in sporting activity in a fun and family-friendly environment. Other areas of attention are family fun days, developing new ways of promoting physical activity and sport, mother/father and toddler sessions and increasing the number of volunteering opportunities for Medway residents within the Sports Clubs. These ideas will help to address the issue within the Medway Towns concerning the general health of the adult population and combat the falling trend of the number of people taking part in physical activity.
Any funding received will be channelled into our youth and schools programme. We have a fantastic team of volunteers who run the club and dedicate time and efforts into ensuring that young people and adults alike have the opportunity to participate in sport and physical activity. Funding for new equipment and advertising material is always hard to come by, so we would put any money towards hockey sticks, balls, bibs, training aids and goal-keeping kit, specifically for schools training. This will help us to promote exercise at this key age, supporting our provision of free coaching and free pitch use.
Our multi-sports facility has served the local community to date and we hope to continue to play a pivotal role in ensuring that sport and physical activity is accessible to the whole community.
Recent comments from parents of junior members include:
“I just want to thank Anchorians Hockey Club for making us parents feel part of the club. Love the camaraderie and the family feel at every event. My boys are really at home at Anchorians.”
“The warm welcome the club gives to both players and parents is fantastic – a real family community.”
While a Back to Hockey attendee said: “First time I’ve picked up a stick in 17 years and loved every minute!”

Moment of Pride

We have achieved so much as a club in the last few years through the hard work of our dedicated volunteer team - a brand new pitch, ClubsFirst accreditation, a thriving youth section and growing community involvement. Any funding will help us to take things to the next level in the local community.
