Health, disability & well-being

Funding level: £1,001 to £5,000

Headway Devon is a local charity providing care, support and opportunities for people with acquired brain injuries across Devon and Torbay.

The people that Headway Devon work with are from all walks of life, but all have survived life-changing illnesses and accidents; from head injuries to illnesses and conditions like meningitis, brain tumour and stroke. Their stories of survival are inspirational, but all have been left facing life-long physical, learning and emotional disabilities.

Headway Devon exist to help people whose lives have been turned upside down by brain injury to come to terms with what has happened to them, overcome their disabilities and go on to get the most of life.

One of the ways in which we do this is by running a day centre in Exeter which opens for two days every week and currently supports 60 people with brain injuries and around 50 family members and carers.

We are looking for funding to make the garden at this centre in Exeter accessible so that it can be enjoyed by our clients with mobility problems. This would include creating ramps for wheelchairs and building raised beds so that our clients can take part in gardening activities, which are therapeutic and can help people to learn new practical skills.

We are hugely lucky to have a centre in a fantastic area of Exeter, by the Quayside. But at present, the outside space at this centre is accessed via a large step, which means that many of our clients are unable to enjoy this area. We would like to remove this barrier by creating a ramp so that all of our clients can enjoy these fantastic surroundings.

We would like to invest in additional garden furniture so that our less able clients have more space to sit and enjoy the space, which looks out over the Devon Wildlife Trust's garden. And finally we would like to create some raised planting beds in this area so that our clients can engage in meaningful and productive gardening activities. We believe that all of these developments will help to improve our clients experience when they are with us, preventing any members of the group from being isolated and ensuring that all of our clients are able to enjoy this fantastic location while learning new skills and building friendships.

Moment of Pride

Far too often people with disabilities are sidelined by society. This project will help our clients to enjoy one of the most pleasant environments Exeter has to offer while taking part in therapeutic rehabilitative activities to help them overcome their disabilities and improve their quality of life
