Funding level: £10,001 to £25,000

The Bradford Bandits BMX Racing Club is based at the BMX track in Peel Park, Bradford.BD3 0NF.Open session are run on Tuesday evenings all year round (floodlit in winter) at which the Club loan out bmx racing bikes, full face helmets and full fingered gloves to anyone who
wants to come along and have a go, children and adults. Costs are kept to a minimum to allow access to all, with riders aged from 4 to 66 coming to take part in the Club sessions and races from all over the Yorkshire region.

The Club management committee has now highlighted the upgrading of the current BMX start gate to a barrel safety star gate as the next must do enhancement. This will ensure if there is a gate malfunction the chance of anyone going over the start gate and then getting trapped under it would be eliminated.

The building and installation of this safety gate is the project the Club is putting forward for support from the Aviva community fund. The attached pictures show the current gate in action and a picture of the safer gate the Club is looking to install as soon as possible.

By installing the new safety gate the Club,as well as improving the safety for the local riders, is hopeful of attracting regional racing back to the BMX track. This will bring over 250 riders to the take part in the event and will give the local riders the opportunity to race against the best riders in the North of England without travelling too far. By taking part in regional events the Club riders can also qualify to take part in the British BMX Race championships. This is the biggest event in the BMX race calendar with over 1000 riders racing for the chance to be a British Champion.

The next step the Club would then be aiming to take would be to host a national race event which would bring over 700 riders and there families to Bradford providing local businesses with opportunities to meet their needs.

The Club has 6 fully qualified coaches who take it turns to run coached session on Thursday evening for riders. This provides the opportunity for Club riders to progress through to the British Cycling training squads as the Club is affiliated to British Cycling. The ultimate dream of these riders being to progress and qualify and participate in the Olympics

Six years ago the Bradford Bandits BMX racing Club helped to secure major funding for the re-development of the BMX racing track in Peel Park which had been previously rebuilt twice by Club volunteers.

Over the ensuing years the Club has paid for materials and machinery and volunteers have given up their time to carry out work to ensure the track which is a Council facility is fit for purpose for the local community.

The Club continually strives to improve the track and its surroundings – in the last 12 months we have planted 400 trees, improved access to the track and car parking and installed toilet facilities. While the club has organised and part funded all of this, obviously as a public facility any benefit to the Club and its members is a benefit for all users.
