Health and wellbeing

Funding level: Up to £1,000

The Stephen Hughes Foundation has been set up by friends and family in memory of Stephen who passed away in October 2014, just nine days short of his 24th birthday, after a six month battle with Giant Cell Myocarditis. The Charity’s core purpose is to fund badly needed research into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of Myocarditis, especially the rarer form of Giant Cell, which is responsible for claiming the lives of many healthy and active young people, often without any warning. A further purpose comes from Stephen’s love of participating in, and coaching, a wide number of sports, including tennis, football, table tennis and basketball, which he took into his role as a primary school teacher. The Stephen Hughes Sports Awards are being set up locally to where Stephen grew up, to provide funding for groups of children, of primary school age, who would not otherwise have the opportunity, to participate in a sport for social skills, health and self esteem purposes. The money towards this project would help support the ongoing awards that are given to local primary schools.

The Stephen Hughes Foundation

Stephen was an extremely close friend of mine who had a passion for life and a unique ability to bring people from all backgrounds together. He had this same enthusiasm until the day he passed and the charity has brought all his family/friends together achieving what Stephen was passionate about.
