Health and wellbeing

Funding level: Up to £1,000

Friends of Crudwell School is a registered charity and the PTA of Crudwell CE Primary School, a small village school in North Wiltshire. We support the school and fundraise for the extras that make our children's learning a better experience.

Our school has a happy working atmosphere where each child can realise their full potential and the school motto of 'Learn, Laugh, Create, Grow' is at the heart of its emphasis on developing the ‘whole’ child – mentally, physically and emotionally. Each child’s mental well-being is a priority for all the staff of our school.

The school believes that one way to promote mental health and emotional well-being is through opportunities to express our feelings and emotions through music. As Plato said, ”Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything”.

We would like to create opportunities for children to express their emotions freely in the playground through a range of playground musical equipment. The equipment would provide endless opportunities for self-expression, a means of communicating with others and a means to build self-confidence and self-esteem.

Our school has always valued the role of music within its curriculum. This is evident from weekly class music lessons, twice yearly school productions, musical evenings and the provision of ocarina lessons to every child in Year 2. Around 42% of our children also benefit from music lessons from visiting teachers in drums, woodwind, brass, violin, guitar, ukulele and piano. Nevertheless, there are still some children who do not have the opportunity to express themselves through music – especially those who find learning a challenge and struggle to play traditional musical instruments or remember traditional notation or rhythms. The equipment would unlock huge opportunities for them.

The playground musical equipment would also enrich the outdoor learning opportunities for all of the children. They are all based on instruments from other cultures and will therefore support the school’s belief that understanding and experiencing other cultures is vitally important. All of the teachers have an enthusiasm for ‘opening the doors on the world’ across the curriculum so would be eager to use the equipment within lessons too.

A grant of £1,000 would help us realise these aims and help us give our children access to Plato’s belief.

Help us to provide the opportunity for music that “… gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything”.
