Community support

Equipping The Lost ARC Kitchen.

The story so far...

Four years ago we bought a building, previously the tallest in Rhayader, and formerly a Mill, Tannery, Cinema and most recently a supermarket, but by the time we took it on, a near derelict site, barely able to keep the Welsh weather at bay.
We have since gutted, repaired, extended and re-roofed, all the while keeping in mind our end goal to create a performance venue, arts centre and cafe to be a real community asset for future generations. We formed The Lost ARC CIC to promote that end goal.

The arts for everyone!

We believe that the arts are an important part of our culture and should be promoted rather than side-lined; available to everyone, not just those in big cities. During our renovation we have not let the fact that we are still a building site get in the way of putting on quality live performance, albeit on a slightly less frequent basis than we would prefer! We keep our building open when we are at work, and like to offer everyone who passes a warm welcome... BUT.... There is still much to be done!

The potential of the building as a bespoke performance venue is being recognised - earlier in the summer the local carnival 'relocated' to our venue due to the inclement weather and the carnival committee are already looking to use the premises next year. The space is being sought by local artists and residents and businesses. Individuals and businesses are offering financial support with fund-raising initiatives. We have a series of Autumn and Christmas events planned including hosting two events as part of the 2nd Rhayader Dragon Festival - one of these will be our first cinema screenings.

We have just been awarded a small grant towards the cost of the audio visual equipment that we need – which is very exciting.

An important aspect of the project is to put together regular cinema screening with food: a wood-fired pizza and a movie being deemed the perfect combination! These events will be great for Rhayader residents and visitors to the town, bringing the communities together for social and recreational purposes on a regular basis. The pizzas will be providing a highlight for relaxed family screenings in and out of the tourist season.

This is where you come in…

By the time you read this the chimney will have been opened out and lined ready to put in the oven. It is being made by The Bushman Wood-Fired Ovens and will be ready to install by the end of November – we just need to pay for it!
The oven is the unique selling point for the cafe. Although we often refer to it as a 'pizza' oven, it can be used for general cooking, for bread baking and slow cooking when cooling down. It will provide a valuable and cost-effective resource for the cafe. An award of £10,000 would help to not only install the oven, but also go some considerable way to equipping the rest of the kitchen. Once fully functional the cafe then becomes a community hub, and also helps generate the income to allow us to really bring the venue to life!

And it’s not just for us…

As soon as it is operational, we will be using the kitchen in collaboration with Rhayader and District Community Support for their Cooking Club - providing practical cooking skills and nutritional advice to less-advantaged members of the community.

A vote for this project is a vote in support of Rhayader community: residents who will have a great arts and community space without having to travel; businesses who will benefit from the increased footfall from the tourists who will have an all-weather arts attraction to encourage them to stay longer in this glorious part of Mid-Wales, as well as community support organisations.
